This HEAL-LEAP Course has been endorsed for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the prestigious British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

HEAL and LEAP have become partners to offer professional training courses as The HEAL-LEAP Institute of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning(EFP/L). Leigh Shambo from HEAL, and Mike Delaney, LEAP Clinical Director / EFP therapist, will be the lead instructors for the initial course starting in 2012; HEAL graduates Polly Burns and Ella Bloomfield will be associate instructors.

The initial course, HEAL-LEAP Institute Level I, comprises of two four-day training workshops. The course is aimed at post-graduate professionals seeking to incorporate Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning (EFP/L) into their therapy or counselling practice. Participants will earn 56 hours CPD by enrolling in both courses, or each 28-hour course may be taken separately.

The HEAL-LEAP Institute starts 7 - 10 June 2012 with the Foundation Level four-day workshop, followed by the advanced Integration Level workshop 6 - 9 September 2012. The courses prepare participants to facilitate horse activities for experiential psychotherapy or learning, helping clients increase relational ability, emotional well-being, self-awareness and empowerment. Participants will gain CPD hours in each workshop and participants who complete both will earn a certificate of completion for HEAL-LEAP Institute Level I.

HEAL defines a therapeutic model for EFP/L, which gives the therapist a framework with a coherent and implicit structure for emotional and relational healing, which is adaptable enough to tailor for different clients' ages and clinical presentations. The model has been used and tested in clinical practice for treating complex PTSD and other clinical disorders.

The HEAL Model focuses on a working limbic bond where horse and human look for, and look out for, each other. This is a practical bond of energy and attention. It allows for subjectivity and intensely personal experiences of meaning while encouraging the reality testing that is a function of healthy ego strength. The goal is to build client capacity for emotional regulation and competencies in attachment, and to bridge these skills to human environments. This model also integrates well with other models of EFP increasing physical and emotional safety as well as clinical effectiveness.

The cost for each four-day training is £2625, which includes lunches and BACP certificate of completion. A limited number of partial scholarships, based on financial need will be available through HEAL by application. Inquiries should be directed to HEAL Operations Manager Ricki Martin, ricki@humanequinealliance.org.
